Toyota Repair: Check engine light, autoparts store, toyota corolla

Question
I have just bought a 2001 toyota corolla, with 127667 miles on it. the car had been sitting in the same place for about a week and a half before i turned it on and drove away with it. the next day the check engine light turned on. i told the guy that i bought it off from what happened and he answered the following: its ok. sometimes when the car has gas but has not been driven for a while the check engine light will turn on... i would suggest you go pump some gas on it and make sure the gas tank cap is well secured and it should turn off". my question is. is there such thing as something like that to happen with the car?

Answer
Possibly yes, go ahead and put in some gas and make sure the gas cap gets put on tight, then clear the trouble code by removing the negative battery terminal, if that's not it the light will come back soon. Or before doing anything at all locate a major autoparts store such as autozone and take it there to have the computer scanned for codes, they do this at no charge, when you know the trouble codes post a follow up and let me know what they are.
