Toyota Repair: engine Toyota Camry LE 2002, field service technician, oil sludge

Question
I own a Camry LE 2002 2.4liter engine - 85.000 miles - the car had all the routine maintenance - oil changes etc.. transmission is great - I did notice the check engine light & oil light come on at random times and then go off - I also had to add oil to the engine about once a month - The dealership said the lights would have to be on when the car was brought in for them to diagnose the problem. Unexpectedly the car seized up and stopped running. I had it towed to my house and took the valve cover off and it was packed with sludge. Have you heard of this before and do you know of any actions taken by Toyota to remedy this problem.

Answer
I don't know what the current policy is for oil sludge, it has to be dealt with at the dealer level,in most cases the first step is to have the dealer confirm that there is a problem and then there is a procedure that they have to follow to determine if the factory is going to be involved, if so then a field service technician comes to the dealer to inspect the engine and make a decision, this can be very involved and time consuming.
