Toyota Repair: 22R oil leak from lower oil pump bolts, crankshaft pulley, crankshaft seal

Question
Vehicle:  1987 Toyota pickup with 22R engine.  180K miles.  Timing cover or oil pump cover never removed.

Hi Ted,

I've noticed oil on my oil pan and front engine below the water pump--not enough to need replacement, but enough to coat the area, and cause a very slow drip when truck is in use.  In reading on the internet, there are many references to the front crankshaft seal being the cause of leaks in this area, though I'm unsure that that's where my leak originates.  I powerwashed the engine, then waited days--without running engine--to see where oil is seeping from.  I only see it slightly seeping from 2 lower oil pump bolt heads and the 1 nearby lower timing cover bolt (they're not loose). There was no oil behind the crankshaft pulley. I then checked after starting engine and having it on high idle for 5-10 minutes, but oil was everywhere it was before I washed it, and I couldn't see the origin.

My question:  Would oil seeping from the lower oil pump bolt heads and left lower timing cover bolt be caused by a faulty front crankshaft seal, faulty oil pump seal, or something else?

I plan to replace the timing chain set (with crankshaft seal) since I've read that the plastic tensioners are prone to breakage after this long, but I don't want to mess with the oil pump unless I need to, and once finished with this big job (for me), I want to ensure that this oil seepage is gone for good.

2nd question:  Do the crankshaft seals invariably need a sleeve at this mileage?  I've seen the need for sleeves referenced on the web, though I'm not quite sure what the "worn groove" means without seeing an example.

Thanks much,
Scott

Answer
The oil pump has an o-ring type seal between the oil pump body and the timing cover, this is the cause of the leak, replace it along with the crankshaft seal when replacing the timing chain. Over time the seal will form a small groove on the machined surface of the crank pulley, I have no information about a sleeve, it sounds like an aftermarket repair procedure.
