Toyota Repair: steering problem?, toyota corolla, proper authorities

Question
Question:
Re: 1998 Toyota Corolla LE

My mother had an accident 4/09 and maintains that the car malfunctioned. The steering wheel jerked back and forth which landed her on a tree that was right next to the road. Just a few feet max from the edge. I specify this because most trees are further off the road and I didn't want you to imagine that there was that much movement. The car veered one way, then back, it all happened quickly. Like lightning striking. Not much time to react.

Bottomline: They suspended her license, even though her driving record is spotless. The judge doesn't believe this was possible. Does your expert opinion concur? Are you aware of any malfunctions with the steering of any car model? Can you site any facts that would support a scenario where a car could have malfunctioned in such a way?

Answer
No, I never heard of such a thing unless a tire blew out or the driver lost control by some other means, ice, snow, rain etc. or suspension failure, this is as far as I can go as far as speculating what might have happened and it's up to the proper authorities to investigate whether any of those factors applied, cars just don't steer by themselves.
