Toyota Repair: 90 celica 4 cyl gt(locked in 4th gear?), control cables, shift control

Question
I was driving and i pulled over in 4th gear someone was getting out so i just kept the clutch in. i put in in first to take off and it idled down real fast like in a higher gear...I started it again put it in N let out the clutch and it died like still in a gear. i think its still in 4th since that was the last one used...CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE!!!It seens like the trans is still in 4 th gear

The shifter uses control cables that run from the shifter to the transmission under the hood, check to see if the shift control linkage is working when moving the shifter inside, it sounds to me that one of the shift control cables is broken or came off.
