Toyota Repair: 1987 Toyota Pickup, clutch disc, clutch kit

Question
My old truck has almost 300,000 miles, but it's a workhorse and starts right
up every time. The clutch seems to be going, engine raced without going
anywhere once last week. Not much play when I press the pedal, though no
smell that I've noticed.Fluid levels are OK. I'm no mechanic, but fairly
competent- can I change clutch myself, should I put in new flywheel, and any
special tools I'll need? Thanks

Answer
There are no special tools required other than a pilot shaft tool to align the clutch disc and a puller to get the pilot bearing out, both are available at any autoparts store and most of the time a clutch kit will include the tool to line up the disc. The flywheel doesn't have to be replaced but I would recommend sending it to a machine shop to have it resurfaced.
