Toyota Repair: Oil usage, excessive oil consumption, oil leaks

Question
I have a 2007 Camry with 36000 miles that uses one quart of oil every 1000 miles.  I was told by my mechanic (who's been in business for 50 years) and several friends who know a lot about cars that the car should not be using this much oil. I noticed in one of your answers about short blocks that this is normal oil usage for a Toyota, did I read that right?  Prior to this car, I had two Hondas which never used oil like the Camry.  The dealer has agreed to replace the short block under warranty.  Is this a common problem in Toyotas?  The first time this problem was noticed, the oil pressure light came on, it was 3 quarts low!  I'd expect this light would come on when the oil was one quart low.  Should I be worried about other things being wrong with this car even after the short block is replaced?  Thank you.  Carolyn

Answer
This sounds a little unusual and it's not a common problem with 2007 camrys. There are a couple of service bulletins that address and oil leak issue which would cause excessive oil consumption but if there are no oil leaks then the engine must be using the oil during the combustion process, if the dealer is willing to replace the engine then they must have a good reason to do so.
