Toyota Repair: Air Conditioning, magnetic clutch, south west florida

Question
Dear Mr. Ritter,
In my recently acquired 1994 Toyota Camry, engine 5S-FE,
when the A/C is switched on it feels normally cold, after
a minute or so the magnetic clutch starts going off and on
until finally, after a few more minutes, it stays off.
I have looked in the drier window while the compressor is
working, and see the gas circulating without any bubles,
thinking there is enough freon in the system.
I am not using the car at the moment, as have noticed that
when the magnetic clutch disengage, the electric fans stop,
and am afraid to damage something else.
As a retired person with very limited income, I hesitate
a little to take the car to a local shop.  I live in south
west Florida not too far from Fort Myers.  Your kind suggestions shall be highly appreciated.  Many thanks.
Philip.

Answer
The cooling fans will stop running whenever the a/c is not working, this is normal, there are two fans, both will turn on with the a/c but with the a/c off only the main fan should come on when the temperature goes up to where the engine is warmed up to normal temperature and then go off again. There may be a problem with the a/c compressor or possibly even the clutch, the first thing I would recommend is that the a/c pressures be checked with line pressure gauges, try to find a shop that specializes in a/c repair and ask them to just diagnose the problem for you, there are just too many things that could be wrong so I would hate to guess what it could be without being able to have the line pressure readings, a few possibilities would include the clutch/compressor failure, a malfunctioning expansion valve or a clogged receiver dryer unit.
