Question
Hi Tim, Thank you so much for this service.  My question is, can I insist on a transmission check when the dealership insist that the problem is with the EMC module?  My husband and I both feel the transmission slip physical bump with shift from 1st to 2nd upon acceleration.  The check engine light came on last week, but then went off.  Again this week it came on so the next day I took it in for checking.  I have owned the "Certified" car for four years; it came with a 100,000, 6 year bumper to bumper warrenty.  However, now the dealership is saying that everything except this type of part is covered and that it is not my transmission, but the EMC instead.  They say that this part was covered to 80,000 miles or 8 years and that since my car is at the 96,000 mile mark too bad it is not covered and I have to pay $700 plus labor and tax.  Do you know of anything else I can do, and again, how can I be sure that it is in fact the part they are mentioning and not my transmission?  I look forward to your response, not just for myself.  I am so frustrated and upset that any help that would benefit me I hope will also benefit someone else and hopefully keep them from being so upset and frustrated.  Thank you!  Terrilyn

Answer
There is a known problem with the ECMs which cause a lot of problems including shifting and even no start or stalling issues, the dealer is correct, there is an updated ECM that needs to be installed, there is a service bulletin (TC015-07)since this is a known problem I would ask for assistance from the service manager of the dealership or by calling the customer service number. Check your warranty for the certified used car, in most cases it extends to 100k miles, also check with your extra care or extended warranty coverage that may have been assigned when the car was bought.
