Toyota Repair: Toyota Corolla A/c light flashes, remanufactured compressors, auto supply stores

Question
QUESTION: Hi there. In my 04 corolla, i havent been getting cold air at all. What happens is
that when I turn a/c on, air compressor starts as well but for few seconds and
goes down and a/c light starts flashing. WHen I went to show this to a
mechanic, he referred it to as compressor failure without inspecting it properly!
Is it a compressor failure or something else?

ANSWER: Not necessarely a compressor failure, the light may be flashing because the freon pressure is too low which will cause the compressor to stop running.  Before drawing the conclusion that the compressor is at fault a service technician should connect pressure gauges to the system, that's the first step, this will indicate the pressures in the system on both he high and low side circuits of the system, the technician can then further diagnose based on those readings. I suggest that you locate a good a/c service tech so you won't have to replace parts at your expense that may not repair the problem.

QUESTION: Thanks very much for your kind information. I did go to mechanic and he said
that it has failure in its clutch! Thus, I need to replace the compressor. Now,
would that be a good idea if I look in eBay for it? Can I rely on it as they give 1
year warranty as well.

Answer
Compressor clutch failure can damage the compressor  so I would agree with that. There are aftermarket remanufactured compressors available at most auto supply stores, you can check on ebay but consider that there are shipping costs involved in most cases, one year warranty is pretty much standard in the industry.
