QUESTION: about a quart per less than 400, and how long will it take to stop using oil...

thanks

ANSWER: I have no idea how long, if ever, it will stop using too much oil, there are some factors to consider, when the engine was rebuilt were the cylinder walls honed correctly? Were the correct rings installed and were they installed correctly? A ring could have broken on installation, these are normally some of the problems that can cause oil consumption after a rebuild, if the cylinder walls were not conditioned(honed)properly the rings may never seat in, in most cases there is no break in period if everything is done right, I've rebuilt many of these engines in the past, the only thing I can suggest at this time is to change the oil, put in a good 10-40 oil and check it in about 1000 miles and see if there is an improvement.

QUESTION:  1)The thing is there is never any visible smoke from the exhaust.
2) I rebuilt this myself... the ring gap was correct after it was bored .030  over. I dont know if they honed it after
boring it, dont know if you have to hone after a bore..
3) So where is the oil going ? PCV is good.

Answer
Any shop that has the facilities to bore an engine also will hone the cylinders, it's part of the job. So I don't think that's the problem, there are only two ways for an engine to use too much oil, either by consumption in the cumbustion process or an external or internal leak, is any oil getting into the coolant?
