Toyota Repair: WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT (Urgent), high mileage car, water pump replacement

Question
Hi TED!   QUICK QUESTION:  WHAN A WATER PUMP IS REPLACED, WHAT SEALS
ARE NORMALLY REPLACED?  I TOLD MY LAST SHOP TO MAKE SURE AND
REPLACE ANY SEALS HE COULD GET TO WHEN HE DID MY WATER PUMP AND
TIMING BELT.  Its been 2 months,  now PEP BOYS SERVICE center says my
camshaft seal is leaking, my rear main seal is leaking, my crankshaft oil seal
is leaking. Oil is getting into the timing belt. HE gave me a print out stating
such.  Both repair shops warranty their work for 12 months/12,000 miles.
What seals is the first repair shop liable for?    ( I know you are not an
attorney)  Should I take my car back to the first shop and see if he will replace
them?    Brian

Answer
I would advise that you contact the mechanic that replaced the water pump and timing belt, I know you told him to replace any seals that he could get to but whether he did or not I have no way of knowing so you need to ask him or look at your invoice what seals if any, were replaced. Seals can start leaking at any time on a high mileage car, they may not have been leaking at the time the timing belt was done or maybe they were replaced and not installed correctly, I don't know. I would take it back to the first shop and offer them an opportunity to correct this situation, if the seals were replaced then their warranty should cover a replacement. Have them also check the rear main seal to make sure it's leaking, this is an expensive repair so make sure that it is leaking and it's not something else that is leaking oil from the top down which can make a valve cover leak look like a rear main seal leak.
