Toyota Repair: 1994 Celica 5 speed, shift linkage, clutch cylinder

Question
Hi, I was sitting at a stop sign this morning.. I had my Celica in first gear.  When I tried to go I heard a bang and then I had no transmission.  The engine was still running but no matter which gear I put it in, there was just nothing there.
The shift linkage seems intact and moves when you shift.  The clutch cylinder also moves when you step on the pedal.  While I was being towed home I tried the different gears and noticed that the speedo didn't work except when I put it in fourth or fifth.  Is it worth trying to repair or is it new tranny time?

Answer
Seldom does the standard shift transmission need to be replaced. Manual transmissions are usually very durable and last a long time. You need to have a technician tear the trans apart to see what went wrong. It might be more cost efficient to simply R & R a rebuilt trans.
