Toyota Repair: Tercel Rod Bearing, stock bearings, toyota dealer

Question
Ted I have a 106,000 miles 1.5 motor automatic Tercel.  The car is nice but I have a knock in the number 4 cylinder (closest to the transmision) and pulled off the rod cap and looked at the bearing which is worn very thin, 1/2 the thickness of the next bearing. I would like to try a $40 fix and replace all the bearings to cure this knock in the number 4.  The crank looks fine, some ridges but nothing my finger nail would get hung up on.  The cap was not loose either.  Do you feel this will work as a good repair to last for sometime, a temporary repair that may last 100 miles or so,,, or not at all?  I read one of your previous posts that recommended a #5 bearing as this would be the thickest.  Can I buy one bearing that is thicker and if so from where?  Should I buy thicker bearings for the rest of the rods or just a set of new stock bearings?  Thanks.

Answer
The tercel engine does not have the different bearing thicknesses as far as I know, clean the bottom of the block surface where the oil pan makes contact and look for some numbers, if so check the number for the #4 rod bearing, a higher number will give less clearance which is what you need, if the crankshaft is not damaged then I would say that replacing the bearings will last for quite a while, by the way, the only place to get different thickness bearings is from the toyota dealer, if available, if not just use the standard size bearings that the parts department has, standard bearings are also available at many automotive retailers.
