Toyota Repair: Check Engine Light - Too Lean Condition?, maf sensor, auto parts store

Question
Hi,
On my '99 Tacoma (2WD - V6 - 70K miles), I recently had a "Check Engine" light on the dash come on.  I brought it by to a friend who had a code scanner and he said it read "Too Lean".  He then cleared the light for me.

He suspected this was due to the MAF sensor.  I have two questions...

1. Can I just clean or replace the MAF sensor myself?  I noticed a can of "MAF sensor cleaner" at the auto parts store -- which looks like it's a variety of electronic component cleaner spray.  Can I just remove the MAF sensor and spray it down?   Or should it be replaced completely?

2.  When "clearing" the Check Engine Light - How long will the light stay cleared for?   Does it come back on eventually??  If so, how can I clear it again?

Thank you very much!

Answer
Yes the MAF sensor is usually the problem when there is a lean code(PO171) it can be cleaned using electronic cleaner, make sure the spray is applied to the platinum sensing elements inside the opening of the sensor, either let it air dry or use low pressure air. The computer has to see the elan condition twice in  order to turn the light on, this may take a couple of days depending on how much the truck is driven. The code vcan be cleared a couple of ways, disconnecting the negative battery terminal or removing the EFI fuse for about ten seconds.
