Toyota Repair: 1999 toyota solara sputter, toyota camry solara, mass air flow sensor

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1999 toyota camry solara I just got a few months ago and shortly after purchasing the I noticed a slight sputter when I drive about fourty miles per hour with little to no load on the engine. I changed the spark plugs, wires, and mass air flow sensor to no avail.  My dad thought the transmission may be thinking about shifting in and out of overdrive, but when I turn overdrive off it still does it.  I am quite confused as to the source, do you have any suggestions for troubleshooting or fixing the problem?

ANSWER: Does the check engine light ever come on and go back off? Is it a 4 cylinder or V-6 engine.

QUESTION: it is a SLE trim V6 engine, and the check engine light never comes on

ANSWER: Most engine/trasmission problems on this model would turn the check engine light on so I'm a little stumped myself. Although there have been some problems with the ignition coil packs and fuel injectors but still those malfunctions will set a misfire code in the computer, can you have the computer scanned to see if there are any history codes or pending codes and then get back to me, in some cases the computer will set a code as a pending code without turning the check engine light on due to an intermittent condition.

QUESTION: I had auto zone scan fort he check engine codes and there was only one in history-the mass air flow sensor because i had replaced it without disconecting the battery.  is there any way the computer itself could cause a problem like this?  Or does toyota have a different diagnostic tool than auto zone?  (i called a couple of toyotad ealers in the area and they charge 80+ dollars just to scan)

Answer
the toyota scantool is different and more advanced than just about anything else but the autozone scantool should detect any present or history codes, not sure what the problem is but I think that there is still a misfire from one of the coils, the ECM itself is seldom the cause of this problem on this model, by the way, has the timing belt been replaced, how many miles are on the car?
