Toyota Repair: 1998 camry, crankshaft pulley, head gasket

Question
Hi Ted,I just put a crankshaft kit, head gasket and new timing belt on my 1998 camry 2.2L. After putting it all back together it would try to start but backfire thru the intake. After finding the right timing marks now it wont even spit or sputter. I have good compression (130),spark and good fuel pressure but I tried spray start anyway. I've checked and rechecked everything over and over again and everything is set to the manual. I even replaced the ecm with one from another 98 camry at the salvage yard because my Snap-on code reader said it could not communicate with the computer and it still wont start. The new/used ecm says "no codes". I'm at my wits end. Please help!!!

Answer
It sounds like the timing is still off, make sure that the #1 piston is all the way up with the crankshaft pulley mark at zero. It's possible that you have set the timing with the piston at the bottom of the stroke, the compression readings are low, they should be at least 170.
