Toyota Repair: stopped toyota camry 1991, 1991 toyota camry, radiator coolant

Question
QUESTION: Hi Tim,
I have a 1991 toyota camry 4 cylinder 177000 miles.  I was driving and all of a sudden the car died with all the warning lights on displayed on the dash.  A few minutes later I could restart the car and no further lights showed on the dash.  How could I go about diagnosing the problem?
Could this be a bad computer? If so, is this easily replaced? Can you instruct me on replacing the computer?

ANSWER: Stan,
need to know more information. Auto or 5 speed?
all the warning lights are on when the ignition key is
on and its not running. The lights all go off when the car
is running. Where you at stopped at a  light or driving down the highway? Has it happened more than once? Many times?
Its not the ECM. Probably a sensor acting up. Is the radiator full
of coolant?

QUESTION: Hi Tim,
Thanks for responding quickly. The Camry is an automatic 1991 LE 4 cylinder .  Yes, all the warning lights are on when the ignition key is on and NOT running. Also the lights go off when the car is not running.  The radiator coolant is full.
I was driving  on city streets and all of a sudden the car died and ALL the instrument panel lights came on. It has happened only once. Hence I stopped driving this car because I lost all confidence because of this problem.  Can you help me trouble shoot this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Stan

Answer
Stan,
The light thing is normal.
Someone needs to attach a scanner to the
ECM to see if any codes were set, you can have this done free at
any auto parts store in your town (Autozone, O'Riley's, etc.)

Make sure all connections under the hood are
OK. Make sure the battery post clamps are clean and tight.
With your hands grab each battery post clamp one at a time and
try to rotate it back and forth to see if its loose. Without me
at the car its very difficult to try and find the problem.

I suggest having a good mechanic with a lot of years experience
look at it. Ask friends and family were such an individual might be.
It shouldn't cost you much. Many times this is just something simple.

Tim

Good luck,
let me know how you make out.
