Toyota Repair: 82 corolla is stalling and has loss of power!, intake manifold gasket, intake leak

My automatic 82 corolla will stall when idleing and has loss of power when driving (especially when going up hill).  I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and wires and no change.  I took the car to a mechanic and he replaced what he thought was the problem which was the fuel pump, and he refurbised and cleaned out the carb.  $400 dollars later and the car stalled while leaving the shop.  I think the mechanic is taking me for a ride.  Do you have any suggestions as to what the problem could be?

It's possible that there is some kind of intake leak, possibly the intake manifold gasket or the carburetor base gasket but this would not affect anything other than idle and stalling at idle, the loss of power at higher speeds under load is caused by something else, if an intake leak can not be confirmed I would recommend finding another carburetor either used or rebuilt.
