Toyota Repair: air, 1991 toyota tercel, r 134 freon

On a 1991 Toyota tercel can you reharge the air yourself ,and what kind of freon does it require i live in calif and i know our state has outlawed a certain type of freon please help !its getting hot out here!thank you

Yes you can recharge the system yourself just not with the R-12 freon which is not sold to the consumer anymore in the US but there is hope, just visit your nearest autoparts store and buy a retrofit kit to use the R-134 freon which is sold in small cans, it's very simple to install the new service valves and then put in the freon following the instructions that come with the changeover kit.
