Toyota Repair: 1991 toyota Corolla, 1991 toyota corolla, temp gauge

Question
Hi Ted. I drive a 1991 Toyota Corolla. its an automatic, 233,700 miles.  About
2 weeks ago I realized that my car was running really hot and my fans would
turn on frequently but the temp. gauge always stays on cold.  The friday
before last it completely over heated and I had no idea it was hot again
because the temp gauge isn't working.  I was wondering how I can fix the
gauge. is there a fuse?  I  thought there might be, so I checked the fuse panel
and there was one fuse labeled gauge but it wasn't burned out. So now I just
don't know.    Thank you for all your expertise. I have read many of the
questions/answers on this forum and you've been very helpful.  I appreciate
your time!

Answer
Locate the temp gauge sending unit under the hood and make sure the connector is still on, I think it's located close to the thermostat on the housing. If it's still on turn the key on, remove the electrical connector and ground it to the engine, the gauge should move up, don't ground it too long or the gauge will burn out, if the gauge moves replace the sending unit, if the gauge won't move there is an open wire or the gauge is bad.
