Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry Air Conditioning, toyota camry, c button

Question
I have a 1994 Toyota Camry LXE 4 cyl 75,000 miles.  My air blows ice cold but then the A/C button begins to blink and I can hear the compressor turn off.  The fan stays on but its no longer cold.  Will I need a new compressor, or is this a sensory problem?

Answer
The first thing I always recommend in case of a/c problems is to connect a/c line pressure gauges to check the high and low side pressures, this gives a good indication as to what the problem may be, the system may be low on freon in which case there is probably a leak somewhere which should be located and repaired. The problem could also be a restriction in the system which may cause high pressures causing the compressor to turn off, this is why it's important to check the line pressures first, a good a/c tech can interpred the readings and find a direction to go to look for the problem.
