Toyota Repair: 2003 Toyota Highlander Limted, toyota highlander, vacuum hose

Question
I have three alarm codes for the fuel evaporative purge system.  Where are the valves located?  I know I have at least two.  One by the gas tank, the other in the engine compartment.

Answer
You didn't say what codes, in most cases I would require the code numbers but the most common are PO 441, 442 and 446, this indicates a large leak in the evap recovery system, this is a complicated system that is extremely hard to diagnose correctly and requires special test equipment. There two items that are the most common and cause these codes most of the time and I will tell you what you can do yourself, first make sure the gas cap is on and tight, second, open the hood and find the air cleaner box, there is one vacuum hose that connects to the top of the air cleaner housing near the firewall, this hose may be disconnected, also check the same hose to make sure it's connected to the metal pipe down below. look for any other evap hoses that may be off under the hood, if the problem is there disconnect the battery negative terminal and reconnect after 10 seconds it should clear the trouble codes and turn the check engine light off.
