Toyota Repair: 1999 Tacoma shut off & will no longer run, cylinder engine, roar

Question
A friend of mine told me her truck was acting like it was running out of gas(she's not the best with vehicles, so I'd assume she means sputtering & such), it shut off and will not restart.  She told me today that the shop looking into it was to hook it up to a diagnostics machine and produce a code.  Any way I can identify meaning of the code, so as to give her a heads up?  As aforementioned, she's not very knowledgeable on her truck, so I'd like to try to keep her trip to 'the cleaners' down to a general roar, haha.  Any info is much appreciated, thx.

Answer
Yes, let me know what the codes are that they get out of the computer, the codes are alphanumeric, a letter or two followed by numbers, I only need the codes, then I can help you decipher them and give you some recommendations as to what needs to be done, it may just save you some money. Also, I need to know if it's a V-6 or 4 cylinder engine and what transmission it has.
