Toyota Repair: 2003 Camry, 96K miles smells like gasoline a week after engine light came on, vapor recovery, trouble code

Question
Our Camry was *perfect* until we recently moved from Wisconsin to Washington state.  First the A/C relay needed replacement ($279), then a few days later then engine light came on.  The dealer turned the engine light off and said they couldn't find anything wrong.  A few days later, after about 10 minutes of driving the car suddenly smelled like gasoline.  The fumes were so strong that I pulled over and got my kids out of the car for fear it might explode.

My husband drove it to work today and had a similar experience, but the smell wasn't as strong.  This sounds unsafe... and expensive.  We will take a beating if we trade it in, but I would never sell it to someone myself.  Advice??

Answer
Check engine lights rarely turn on because there is nothing wrong, it came on because the ECM set a diagnostic trouble code(DTC) they should have told you what the code was, just turning it off and saying there is nothing wrong is not acceptable. The fuel smell could be the reason because if there is a leak or malfunction of the fuel vapor recovery system it will set a code, in any case I would get another diagnosis at another facility, most larger cities in Washington have more than one dealer so I would recommend doing that and have it towed because a fuel leak can lead to a dangerous situation.
