Toyota Repair: 2002 Corolla Clutch, clutch pedal, cylinder problem

Question
The "friction point" on the clutch pedal in my corolla has progressively become lower (over the past year or so), when I put it in reverse it clunks. Can it be adjusted, or does it need bleeding (fluid replacement), or is the master cylinder on the way out?

Answer
Check the fluid in the reservoir, is it low? If so then there may be a leak in the system, check the slave cylinder on the bellhousing, peel the rubber cap back to check, check for a master cylinder leak at the inside of the firewall where the cylinder is bolted on. If there are no external visible leaks it could still be a master cylinder problem, it may have an internal leak, in that case both the master and the slave cylinders should be replaced.
