Toyota Repair: 89 Toyota 4 Runner dies when slowing down to stop and turning at low speed, jumper wire, speedy reply

Question
QUESTION: Hi.
I have an 89 Toyota 4 Runner(5 spd) with approx 130,000 miles on a rebuilt motor put in 8 months ago.
Recently my truck starting stalling when I am slowing down to stop. It also does this as I slow down to turn. Check oil and Check engine lights both come on. Temperature gauge is normal. The truck starts back up immediately. This happened once two months ago and never happened again until now. Now it happens every time I drive. Any information on what is happening and how to fix it is much appreciated. Thank you.

ANSWER: Since the check engine light turns on the first step is to find out what the trouble codes in the computer may be, have this checked and let me know or if you would like to try doing it yourself I will show you how to do it.

QUESTION: Thanks Ted for your speedy reply.
Yes! I would like to know how to check the trouble codes in the computer myself. This 20 year old truck has become a major expense in my life and I am looking to avoid taking it to a mechanic if possible.

Answer
There is a small diagnostic check connector under the hood with a cover on it, the cover should say diagnostic on it, open the cover, inside the cover are the connector designations, identify the terminals TE1+E1 and put a jumper wire between the two terminals, turn the key on, the check engine light will start flashing, it will flash in a two digit code, for instance 2 blinks followed by 5 would mean a code 25, there may be more than one code so be careful when reading them, the codes will repeat until the key is turned off or the wire is removed.
