Toyota Repair: lifter tap, paint marker, chrysler tech

Question
I'm a Chrysler tech and drive a 2000 solara 4 cyl that has a lifter tap but they are shimmed it has 90 thou on car and getting ready to replace t belt and would like to shim the lifters curious on what the procedure was to do this to find the right size shims and would a aftermarket shop manual gave this information and when I go to Toyota to get the shims do i need to know all the sizes to the shims or am i purchasing a kit of shims which will have to be ordered im sure and i cant be left without a car for days thanks

Answer
Although there are some special tools that compress the lifters they don't work very well and to me not worth the expense, what I normally do to check and adjust valve clearance is to check each one and then with a marker write down OK on the edge of the cylinder head if they are within specs, if not OK I write down the clearance reading next to the valve on the edge of the head, for instance if the maximum allowed is 0.10" and I measure 0.14" then I know that I need to increase the shim thickness by at least 0.04" to get it to 0.10". After all the valves are marked I pick out the ones that need adjusting, I loosen the cams by loosening the cap bolts, this will give enough room to pull the shims that need to be changed out, loosen them with a small pick and pull them out with a magnet. with a paint marker I mark the shims for intake and exhaust and the cylinder number, I3 would be intake 3, etc. Then mark them down on a piece of paper to keep track which ones need to be changed, there is no shim kit, the dealer has a box full of shims, once you have figured out what shims are needed by measuring the old shims you can pick out the needed shims at the toyota dealer but I would advise that you take the micrometer with you to measure the new shims needed, they shims have a number system which I find to complicated to deal with so what I normally do is pick the shims I need by measuring them, hope this is not too confusing but it's the way I normally go about this.
