Toyota Repair: 97 Previa engine stops after running 1 min., obd ii code reader, fuel pump relay

Question
I'm trying to help a friend with his 1997 Toyota Previa van. It starts fine but shuts down after a minute. You can hear the fuel pump relay on the firewall make a click. The "engine check" light is on, but I can't read the codes through the dash like earlier models. I only have an OBD 2 reader and we can't get the vehicle to a garage. Any ideas. Thanks

Answer
I think it still has the OBD I diagnostic connector next to the outside of the driver's seat, open the cover and connect a jumper between the terminals TE1/E1 and then read the codes from the check engine light. If you have the OBD II code reader you should be able to connect to DLC 3 located under the cover on top of the dash in the center.
