Toyota Repair: water leak, vacuum hoses, headgaskets

Question
1992 Toyota pickup, V-6 fuel injection.  There is a water leak at the back right hand side of the engine.  Can not see well due to the injection system.  Is by the heater hose, how hard is it to remove injection system?  Do you need to remove it?

Answer
It's pretty involved but you should be able to see where it's leaking with a flashlight and a small mirror, it's common for headgaskets to leak so make sure it's not that. There is a coolant transfer pipe under the intake manifold, we have seen those leak into the center of the engine and the leak out the back, maybe the cooling system should be pressurized for the leak to show more. In any case removing the intake system requires removal of the top timing cover, timing belt removed from the top pulleys, then the intake chamber and then the intake manifold, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined and have tools it can be done, I would recommend marking all the vacuum hoses that are removed to help reinstall them correctly.
