Toyota Repair: 86 Pickup 22R Whirring/Bearing noise, clutch components, clutch release

Question
QUESTION: Hello,
I bought a 1986 Toyota Pickup about a month ago (150,000kms, 5speed, 2wd, 22R).  When I am driving and the engine is revving high I hear a whirring noise that will continue as I shift.  It sounds almost like a bearing that keeps spinning until I complete the shift.

Not sure if it is relevant, but the engine sounded fine until it got cold here (-15 or so at night).  I don't have a tach, but the sound starts at a point just before I shift.

Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: With the transmission in neutral is the noise there when the engine is revved up high also? If so does the noise go away when pushing the clutch pedal all the way down or is the noise only there when driving?

QUESTION: Yes, with transmission in neutral the noise is still there.  The noise doesn't go away with the clutch pedal in, it will slowly 'spin down' after releasing the gas pedal (a couple of  seconds delay after the engine revs down).

Answer
My best guess on this, without hearing the noise, would be that the clutch release bearing is the cause or possibly the pilot bearing in the end of the flywheel, in either case the transmission would have to be removed to inspect the clutch components.
