Toyota Repair: 3 stage & p/s flush, toyota corolla dx, toyota corolla

Question
Hi Kerry,

I'm Vicky & I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla DX, with just 56,500 mileage. The car has always been serviced according to the dealer's suggestion.

However, today I got an oil change, & they recommended me a complete "Cooling System Flush".  The sales said that my engine temperature was "a little" high, he opened the hood and I saw a stream of steam coming out of it.  I declined the service.  Did I make the right decision?

He then recommended "3 stage & P/S flush".  He said that's gonna increase my MPG.  I refused again.  Are these expensive maintenance really necessary?  My car's running well, average MPG is 31.

If you say I need to get those services done,  I'll go back to the dealer next week.  It's just that I  feel they take advantage of female customers & I don't trust them that much now.

Answer
its not that he was trying to rip you off.  just like any fluid, they get dirty and absorb moisture.  if the p/s fluid is really dark, it may need to be flushed.  same with the coolant, if it gets cloudy, it may need to be flushed also...esp with winter approaching....don't be afraid to ask questions, tell him to show you a comparision of the fluids....
