Toyota Repair: 92 4Runner clutch slave cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, hydraulic clutches

Question
My 92 4Runner (4x4 - auto trans) clutch slips sometimes, other times it works fine. this has been going on for about a year. sometimes at a stop I will downshift to get moving then put it back in drive. A smog tech said it was probably my clutch slave cylinder. I did not think auto. transmissions had clutches. how can I diagnose this (where is it)and/or repair. THANK YOU!

Answer
Automatic transmission don't have hydraulic cylinders but they do have clutches, a few of them, they are all inside the transmission, they are multiple disc hydraulic clutches, any slipping is caused by an internal hydraulic pressure leak which not good news, the transmission is probably going to need to be replaced with either a remanufactured or used assembly.
