Toyota Repair: Toyota Corolla 93 - power problems, toyota corolla, section labled

Question
My car is a Toyota Corolla 93 1.8L engine, (Japanese version). I changed out a bad starter early today and upon finishing found that the car didn't start, the wipers and AC fan don't work, and the car won't shift out of park (button won't go in). Further investigating without a manual shows me that 1. The starter is good, if I turn the key to on and manually short the relay wire the car starts. Digging around some more I found a 40A fuse (green) labeled AM1 in a section labled "FL BLOCK" in the fuse box in the engine compartment is blown. I've also noted that this fuse has power to it even with the car off and the key removed. BRIEFLY (I know fuses were created for a reason) shorting across this fuse with the car off causes the starter to start. My extremely poor manuals make reference to a starter relay hidden somewhere in the car and I'm curious as to whether this may be the problem. I could sort this out with a good wiring diagram/schematic I think but can't find one.
I'm really at a loss as to how this happened as well since I was careful to disconnect the battery before working on the starter. I'm not sure at what point things had an opportunity to go south.
Can you tell me what parts I need to be checking?
What would be responsible for supplying power to this AM1 fuse with the key off and where would it be located?
Any idea how this may have occurred (so I can avoid doing it in the future)?

Answer
This fuse gets voltage directly through the 100A alternator fuse which is connected directly to the battery. Replace the 40A fuse and check the 100 a fuse, if you need a wiring diagram I can email one to you but I will need an email address and need to know if it's a
4AF-E or 7AF-E and M/T or A/T.
