Toyota Repair: 1993 toyota p/u 4x4, high beams, lighting problem

Just bought the truck today and on the way home the service engine light came on. Also when you cut the high beams on, the headlights go off.  Any help for a single mom?  Thanks

I would need to know the diagnostic trouble code stored in the onboard computer to help with the check engine light, most repair shops can do this, then you can let me know if you need more information on how to go about repairing the problem, the lighting problem may be because both headlight sealed beams may have burned out on the high beams only,if the high beams come on by pulling up on the switch then the switch is the problem, if they do not come on by pulling up there may be a bulb problem or fuses, the fuses for both high and low beam are located under the hood in the black fuse box near the battery, they are marked in the cover of the fuse box to find their location.
