Toyota Repair: timing gear, clock position, o clock

Question
i am working on a 1987 toyota pick-up.  my engine crank turned causing me to lose the setting of the timing gear or chain.  can you tell how to reset the timing on this enigne?

Answer
There is a key (notch in the crank that keeps the harmonic balancer from spinning freely) in the end of the crank. That should be pointing upwards at 12 o clock position. If you are replacing the chain, the new chain should have 2 different color links to guide you. One goes on the camshaft sproket with the dot pointing upwards at 12 o clock. The other link should line up with the divot on the crankshaft. Hope this helps. If all else fails, put the timing cover and harmonic balancer back on without bolting them down and double check the alignment of your timing.(should be pointing to the 0 on the cover) It is better to be safe than sorry.
