Toyota Repair: Camry broken speedometer, 1990 toyota camry, toyota camry

Question
I have a 1990 Toyota Camry. It used be be my brothers, and when he gave it to
me my dad and I discovered that the speedometer and odometer are both
broken. I don't really care that much about the odometer, but the speedometer
is a problem. We read somewhere that it's probably a cable that's broken but we
don't really know what cable it is or what it looks like or what to do. So if you
could help us figure out what to do to fix it that would be great. Thank you.

Answer
The cable should be attached to the top of the transmission, unscrew the round nut and pull the cable out, the other end of the cable attaches to the rear of the speedometer which means the instrument cluster must be removed, remove the cluster and disconnect the cable, turn the cable on the transmission end and see if the cable turns at the other end as well if not the cable is broken, if the cable is good then the speedo assembly must be replaced.
