Toyota Repair: 1981 toyota info, small screws, vacuum hose

Question
my 1981 toyota pickup (carb) is eating too much gass  and the smoke that comes out of the tailpipe is black like is isnt burning all the gas ??   it is like it is dumping to much fuel in to the carb .   what should i do to fix the problem??  please reply  greatly appreciated!!!

Answer
A couple of things to check: check the choke to see if the choke plate is open all the way when the engine is warmed up, if the choke is stuck in the partially closed position the reason needs to be determined, sometimes it can be freed up using a choke spray cleaner, check the secondary butterfly in the carb to make sure it is not partially stuck open, it has to be closed all the way at idle, the carb also has an auxillary accelerator pump, this is in a small housing on the carb held on with three small screws, there used to be a common problem with these diaphragms rupturing causing excessive fuel to get into the intake manifold through the vacuum hose.
