Toyota Repair: 2001 Toyota Camy high fast idle, engine coolant temperature, toyota camry

Question
Hi Ted,

I have a 2001 Toyota Camry (4 cylinder) that idles at about 1900 RPM on a cold start. During warm-up it gradually idles down to about 650 RPM and runs fine thereafter. Before this problem occurred, the engine would idle about 1300 to 1400 RPM on a cold start.  I ran a ODB scan and there are no error codes. Any suggestions on what could be causing the excessively high idle speed on cold start?

Answer
Cold idle speed depends largely on the engine coolant temperature, 1900rpm is not abnormal if the outside temperature dropped from before when it was fast idling at 1400rpm, I don't think there is a problem with this. After all it does return to normal idle after warm up.
