-----Question-----
I have an '87 Toyota pickup with about 263,000 miles. Until the engine completely warms up, it makes a sound like glub, glub, glub and shakes the whole truck. Black and white smoke come from the tail pipe along with a black dust that accumulates quickly on the driveway. Sometimes it smells like gas. The engine usually doesn't stall, but it has before. When I've been driving for awhile and the engine is completely warmed up, it seems to idle fine with none of the smoke, soot or shaking. Also, I can't seem to locate the fuel filter. I've traced all the visible fuel line to no avail. I'm beginning to think that Auto Zone gave me the wrong filter and I'm looking for the wrong shaped part.
I am a single dad and a full time student. I desperately need this truck to last the rest of this year. Please tell me I can fix it. Thank you very much for your time.
-----Answer-----
Can you tell me if the engine is a 22R(carbureted) or 22RE (fuel injected)?

Answer
It sounds like there may be a carburetor problem, black smoke indicates that the engine is running way too rich, remove the top of the air cleaner and check the choke plate, make sure it's not stuck closed and opens as the engine warms up, the fuel filter is not the problem but in case you want to replace it the location is on the rear near the right rear fender on the frame. If there is a lot of white smoke this would indicate an internal coolant leak which may mean a blown headgasket.
