Toyota Repair: dies at idle, model toyota, voltage signal

Question
I have a 90 model toyota pickup with a 4cyl. The truck diels at idle most of the time.  Runs fine if reved up. has a code 14.

Answer
Austin,

First, clean inside the throttle body and make sure it is not gummed up.  Second, try to set the base idle speed using the set screw on the throttle body.

Code 14 means there is no IGF signal to the computer. It is an ignition system code. After the coil fires the spark plug it produces a small voltage signal to confirm the spark took place. When the ECM does not see the signal it will shut off the fuel injectors to avoid loading the engine up with fuel. Possible causes are a bad coil or bad ignitor.

I would suggest clearing the codes first after you clean the throttle bore and see if it re occurs.

Good Luck!!!
