Toyota Repair: 2006 Toyota Highlander Trailer Hitch Wiring, left turn signal, toyota highlander

Question
I recently installed a Toyota Trailer Hitcher on my 2006 Highlander.  Hitch package came with wiring which I just plugged into existing socket within vechile.  Dealership also sold me a converter which plugs into another pre-exsisting socket within vechile.  Is converter necessary??

Answer
Mike,

If your highlander uses seperate turn signal indicators that are not combined with the brake lights then yes you need the converter. Most trailer wiring substitutes the brake light with the turn signal. Most Toyotas do not hence the converter needed.

Try this.

Use your trailer or a vehicle that does not have seperate orange turn indicators on the rear. Have an assistant hold the brake pedal down. Both brake lights are on. Now have them turn on the left turn signal. You will notice that the left brake light goes off and is replaced by the flashing turn signal.

Now, on a vehicle with seperate turn indicators try the same thing.  You will notice both brake lights stay on and the turn signal is added along with the brake light.

Bet you never noticed it before huh? You will catch yourself watching the turn signals on cars in traffic now.
