Toyota Repair: 97 corolla 1.6 w/3 spd tranny, cv axle, gear oil

Question
The passenger front cv axle is loose (up and down play) where it enters the diff. I drained the diff. and found it to be almost empty. I want to pull the motor and change the bearing in the diff. but I dont know a thing about transmissions. Can you rebuild the diff without opening the transmission itself? What fluid does the diff take? Where can I find a manuel for this operation?

Answer
The transmission has to be disassembled to replace any parts of the differential, it uses standard 80-90 wt gear oil. The best manual is the factory manual from the dealer but I would discourage doing this yourself, there are special factory tools involved for disassembling and reassembling the transmission.
