Toyota Repair: 1991 Toyota Corolla Overheat Mistake, 1991 toyota corolla, coolant water

Question
Hey,
My 1991 toyota corolla overheated today and after me driving it about 5 km back home discovered that the temp guage read overheat and a coolant hose had blown. The corolla kept on stalling on the drive home and upon inspection at home the radiator was dry and coolant had gone all ver the car. What other problems could arise from this?? And what could have caused it?

Thanks ted.

Answer
It depends on the extend of the overheating, I don't know if the hose came off first which then caused the overheating or if the engine overheated for another reason which caused excessive coolant pressure and then the hose came off. What I would suggest, if this was my car, I would replace the thermostat(it could have been stuck closed) and replace the hose, then fill the radiator slowly with coolant/water, about 50/50 mix, it may take a while to get all the air out of the system, once the radiator is filled start the engine and let it idle, watch the temp gauge, leave the radiator cap off, there will be more air bubbles out through the coolant, add more coolant slowly, let it come to operating temperature and make sure the cooling fan comes on, if that goes well and there is no overheating at idle install the radiator cap and drive it, watch the temp gauge, if the temp stays normal it is probably ok, if it still overheats there is another problem in which case you can contact me again and let me know what happens.
