Toyota Repair: 1995 Toyota Corolla, brake light switch, toyota corolla

Question
I have a gear shift that gets stuck. I use a screw driver to override something and it is driving. Do you think that I can repair it or would I need to go to a Toyota dealer and about how much should it cost for Toyota to repair it?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Jackie,

Before you take your car into a Toyota dealer, check to see if your brake lights work correctly.  The shifter uses power from the brake light switch to unlock it. If the switch is bad or a fuse is blown it won't work. The manual override is there just for that so if you loose power you can take it out of gear.
