Toyota Repair: starting problem 1989 toyota camry, 1989 toyota camry, neutral safety switch

Question
I have a problem - with starting my camry 4 cylnder -has 117,000 miles ( motor is in great condition) recently -it would start up and run- when i stop to fuel up or any stop after parking car will not start-wait 20 minutes and it will start up - i have bought a new battery, alternator, starter and still have same problem. I had someone test the neutral safety switch and no power running through. I have already spent too much money on this problem- ( even a $200.00 Pep Boys to put black electrical tape on wiring( assembly to battery cable) Can you please give me some advice.

Answer
Michael,

If I had to guess I would say you have bad starter contacts. When the car acts up listen carefully under the hood for a "click" sound when you turn the key between start and run position. Sometimes you can keep cycling the key between start and run and it will catch.  I have seen re-man starter right off the shelf with old contacts in them. Also, make sure your keeping good battery power at the starter while the key is held in the start position.

Also, if the car ever had an alarm check the starter interrupt relay under the dash.

Hope that helps.
