Toyota Repair: 1993 toyota 4X4 V6 fast idle, coolant system, toyota 4x4

Question
had the truck since new. 3.0 L V6, 190,000 miles, runs like a dream.  one problem i cannot figure out though is the engine idle.  it is idling close to 1200.  i work on cars (my) in a home shop and am familiar with engines.  repair books like haynes say to find the idle adjustment screw and set down the idle.  duh, sounds easy enough?  i CANNOT now or have i ever found the right idle screw.  there is a bunch of vac driven dashpots and such.  i am stumped.  i just put a new clutch in the truck and have family memebers driving it.  a fast idle causes drivers to ride the clutch at startup which i really want to avoid.  any help?

thanks in advance,

Answer
The backside of the rest that the arm on the throttle plate.
It very likely won't help. Aslong as the idle valve has suffecient throw to control the idle. The ECU will idle the engine at whatever speed it determins is what it shold idle at.
Cold idle, or A/C idle up is about 1200rpm on those engines. Off-hand I think the warm idle is 700rpm +/- 100rpm. If it's dropping the idle when warm, then the cold idle will never change unless you force it too. & it will be unhappy with being forced. ;)

You can play with it all you want, don't let me stop you. I've jsut almost never encountered that being a solution to anything unless someone has previous played with the throttle stop, or left the accelleration pedal with too much slack.

Tell you what tho. You can check that the TPS sensor is in adjustment. (That the idle signal comes on & off when idling). The ignition timing also.

btw, NEVER let that engine overheat. You MUST stay completely ontop of coolant system maintenance. That particular engine head overheats the #6 exhaust valve & will eventually burn the valve out, blow the head gasket, or both. Glad to see you changing the thermostat. Be sure to flush it out.
