Toyota Repair: Toyota Camry 95, toyota camry 1995, neutral safety switch

Question
My wife has a Toyota camry 1995, The car used to run perfectly well until timing belt went out. A mechanic replaced a new one and for  about a week it was fine until it developed a second problem. The car sometimes starts ok and runs but when you switch off the engine, it wont start again. I took it for starter check all ok. I replaced water sensor, now when it happened to start, it is erratic in motion. sometimes it picks up speed, sometimes it looses. I actually don't understand the car now and I have spent too much on it. A second mechanic started it with a piece of wire attached to the neutral safety switch. What could be the problem.

Answer
If he had to use the NSS to start it then the neutral safety switch is broken. Fix that.

Otherwise, it sounds like they isntalled the timing belt incorrectly. Set the crackshaft to 0*btdc on the timing gauge down by the belt pulleys. Then make sure the cams line up exactly with that using the little marks on the pulleys. If they don't, drive back to mechanic #1 & tell them they put the belt on incorrectly.
