-----Question-----
My 98 Rav4 is difficult to shift out of 1st into 2nd gear when cold (-15C).  I have no problem shifting from 2nd to first. When the vehicle is warm all shifts are smooth.  Also, when starting the vehicle when cold the clutch is fully depressed and transmission in neutral. As the clutch is engaged with the transmission still in neutral I can hear a sound like a dry bearing noise. The noise continues for about 30 seconds.  The noise stops if I press the clutch petal fully down.  There is no noise if the outside temperature is above freezing.
-----Answer-----
Start by lubing the linkage up & changing the transmission fluid. Might aswell do the differential fluid too.

Answer
If you lived here I'd tell you the synchro's for first gear are going out, but you don't. Honestly I'm not really sure because it's so cold where you are. At worst, it only gets to about freezing here for a month & change. Damn man, it's still 60*F (15.555*C) outside here today.

You may want to call up some local Toyota, & independant repair shops & ask how the cold might affect it.
