Toyota Repair: Compression problem, angle valve job, blown head gasket


Question
I got the head off the car and it had a bent intake valve on piston #2 and a cracked intake valve on piston #3 im not sure if the valve seats are messed up or not before I checked I wanted to know do I need to get the head repaired or do I just need to replace the valves?

I just got an 1985 toyota Tercel from a friend and it will not start up very easily and a shop that my friend took it to said that there was no compression in valve #2 and I was curious what would cause this problem?

Pull the valvecover off & check the valvetrain. From there... Pull the head & inspect the headgasket & rings.

I'd send it to a good engine builder that has their own machine shop & have the head milled flat for around $75.
I would also have them re-cut & replace the valves.


For some extra power (Tho I've no idea what kind on that engine), you can have them cut a 3-angle valve job, unshroud the valves, blend in the short side radious, clean the bowl area & ports up. They can gasket match the ports. But... They're really more a visual selling aid. Gasket matching is almost worthless.


Regardless. Have them recondition the head & if you want to play alittle bit. Grab your a rotary tool with a flexable extension and an 80-120 grit flap wheel sanding disk. Clean all the ports up on the head & intake manifold. Blend any rough castings out. Just don't disturb the valve seat.
For that matter, you can clean it up before hand. You can also clean & polish the combustion chamber. This will keep carbon from sticking to the wall. (Carbon super-heats, and when fuel hits it it causes pre-ignition.)
